Chewing Gum: A Sticky Situation
The following steps are required to produce chewing gum. Listen and watch the video closely to identify them in the correct order.
_______ Cool and flatten the mixture into strips
_______ Package the chewing gum in boxes or packs
_______ Produce gum base using chickle, wax, fat, and rubber
_______ Remove the batter and place it on the gum line.
_______ Condition the chewing gum by allowing it to rest.
_______ Boil the gum base into a hot syrup.
_______ Add sweetener, flavoring, and coloring and mix
_______ Spray the chewing gum with a sugar mixture and dry it
_______ Add glycerin and blend it into the hot syrup
_______ Polish the chewing gum

We are interested in making sure that the bubble gum we use is very stretchy. You can help us determine which guy to use by following the instructions in the packet we have prepared and reporting back your results in a timely manner.

Bubble Gum Testing Instructions
PROBLEM: Determine which type of bubble gum stretches the longest on average after being chewed for three minutes.
MATERIALS:Three different types of bubble gum
Gram scale and one gram weights
Meter stick
Recording sheet
Graph paper
Pencil
PROCEDURES:
1. Work with three other members as a research team. You must each keep your own data, and then share the data to make a final recommendation.
2. Predict how far you believe each brand of gum will stretch after being chewed for three minutes and record your predictions on your recording sheet.
3. Use the gram scale to measure out 5 grams of each type of gum. Being accurate will allow you to control the amount of gum being chewed for each brand.
4. Chew the gum for three minutes, being sure to have another member of your research team keep accurate track of the time.
5. Remove the gum, and stretch it as fast as it will go before breaking.
6. Measure the distance the gum actually stretched and record your data on your recording sheet.
7. Repeat the process with the other brands of gum.
8. Complete the data collection sheet and return it to your teacher.
