Berlin Airlift

Record Group 342 -G 25-+69635 AC

Master Sergeant Paul G. LeBeau, Riverside, California, is shown at the controls of the "jet" deicing unit which he designed and built at Furstenfeldbruck Air Force Base. The unit consists of a jet aircraft engine wit a special mount placed on a truck in such a manner that the hot air blast from the tailpipe can be directed on the ice coated wings of aircraft as the unit moves slowly past. With the blast of hot air reaching a temperature of 156 degrees Fahrenheit forty feet from the end of the tailpipe when the jet engine is running only at thirty-five percent of capacity, the unit will be used to keep airlift planes free of ice while being loaded.
