HOSTS Structured Mentoring Program

HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) is a structured mentoring program in language arts. The program targets students (K-12) who need assistance in reading, writing, higher order thinking and study skills. HOSTS is neither a curriculum nor is it computer assisted learning, but an instructional strategy that is tailored to a state's, district's, and school's language arts/reading objectives and philosophies.

HOSTS matches students with trained parents, business and community volunteer mentors who work to strengthen students' reading, writing, vocabulary development, study skills, and higher order thinking skills. Mentors provide role models of successful people who motivate, support and provide individual students attention.

The HOSTS program is in its fifth year at J.C.Cowen. It currently serves 45 children from the first, second, and third grades. The program is directed by Linda Hughey, and she is assisted by Linda Wilkinson and one hundred and thirty-five community volunteers.

If you are interested in knowing more about HOSTS, or if you would like to become a volunteer please contact Linda Hughey at 1-915-235-4797.
