Xi'an Foreign Language University (XFLU) is located in the southern suburbs of Xi'an in a district which boasts over ten institutions of higher learning. Close to the university are the Xi 'an Botanical Garden, the Shaanxi History Museum and the Big Goose Pagoda (from the
Ming Dynasty ) and Xi'an railway station.
Founded in 1952.XFLU is the only institution of higher learning in the northwestern part of China that specializes in the teaching of foreign languages and literature. The languages taught include English. Russian, Japanese,German, French, Spanish, italian,Thai and Esperanto. In addition, courses are offered in tourism, international finance,trade, economic cooperation and Chinese-English secretarial training. The university also runs the School of Chinese Studies for international students.
The university (according to the 1995 enrollment) has a student body consisting of 3,200 full-time students pursuing undergraduate and graduate studies, and 110 international students for degree or non-degree programs. Its full-time faculty is made up of 42 professors,95 associate professors, 250 lecturers and 42 academic staff from overseas. To maintain quality teaching and research the university has established and maintains active academic and scholarly exchanges with 16 colleges and universities in eight countries.Each year the university accepts professors from these institutions for teaching appointments and sends as well its faculty members to these sister institutions for academic research or teaching.

The School of Chinese Studies is part of the Xi'an Foreign Language University.Starting from 1979, the School of Chinese Studies has been offering courses in Chinese language, history,culture, and economic development to international students. For the past 16 years the school has hosted more than 2,000 students from 17 countries including U.K., USA, Canada Japan, South Korea. Germany, Australia and Belgium.It is the first and biggest of its kind in China's northwestern region.
The school has twenty fulll-time faculty members
who are accredited by the State Education Commission, China's highest leading body in education, to teach Chinese and Chinese culture to international students. In addition, the school employs 15 adjunct professors from within the university to teach classes pertaining to Chinese studies in English or Japanese.
Students are streamed into four levels of classes according to their starting proficiency in Chinese, namely, beginners, elementary, intermediate and advanced. For sufficient individual attention, each class is assigned no more than 18 students, The courses offered fall into two broad categories, compulsive and elective. The former includes intensive reading, extensive reading.listening and speaking, audiovisual, writing, news,selected topics, Chinese characters and Chinese history. The latter consists of  painting,calligraphy and martial arts.
Students at the end of a one-year course should be able to:

hxy-point.gif (836 bytes)pass the HSK (Hanyn Shuiping Kaoshi: standard Chinese proficiency test in China) at the elementary level.

Students at the end of a two-year course should be able to:

hxy-point.gif (836 bytes)achieve the proficiency in Chinese as reguired for admission by Chinese universities,and
hxy-point.gif (836 bytes)pass the HSK at the intermediate level.

The school is the only institution in the northwestern part of China authorized to conduct HSK. As such, it has international students from other schools and regions in China for HSK every year.

The school operates in two semesters, autumn and spring with each lasting for four months. In addition, the school runs four-week intensive summer sessions in July and August.

The school maintains active and extensive academic and scholarly exchanges with
