OBJECTIVE: Employment involving the use of my research and analytical skills
I. CURRENT POSITIONS
Consumer Safety Technician, U.S. Food and Drug Administration,
Los Angeles District (5/94-Present)
Perform traditional and online searches for files and
other information related to Freedom of Information (FOI) requests.
In addition, I provide local and regional management with statistical data
regarding district performance. Responsible for training up to five
interns and new hire employees in legal processing and data search techniques;
have also conducted formal training sessions on the use of FDA online databases.
My tenure includes a 60-day detail with the Data Processing Unit and numerous
occasions on which I acted for the district Consumer Complaint Coordinator. Also function as steward for union chapter (see below).
I have won seven performance awards including a headquarters-level commendation.
Math/Science Tutor, Educators with a Vision, Inc.
(8/97-present)
Part-time employment at a private tutoring/college placement
service catering to elite and non-traditional students. Provide tutoring
in numerous subjects including all levels of mathematics through intermediate
calculus and advanced statistics. Also provide SAT preparation for
high school students allowing them to achieve gains of as much as 200 points
on their composite scores using methods I devised myself. Maintain
contacts with colleges and universities nationwide for promotional and
recruitment purposes and help clients assemble portfolios of their accomplishments
for use in college applications.
II. EDUCATION
CURRENT: CSU Dominguez Hills--Currently pursuing
an MS degree in quality assurance. Completion anticipated 1999. Completed
coursework includes Total Quality Management, advanced statistics, experimental
design, and reliability engineering. Current GPA is 4.0.
1996-1997: Coastline Community College--Quality
Assurance Certificate earned 1997; Dean’s List honors for Fall 1996.
1993: University of San Diego--Graduate-level,
ABA-approved Lawyer’s Assistant Program completed 1993. Honors earned
in 4 out of 5 classes.
1987-1991: UC San Diego--BA degree in history
conferred 1991. Minor in chemistry; extensive coursework in mathematics
and writing.
III. PREVIOUS PAID EMPLOYMENT
(NOTE: All jobs held between October 1993 and April 1994 held
concurrently)
1994: Law Firm of Nimmo and Steigerwalt--Acted
as firm receptionist at high-profile criminal defense firm; also performed
paralegal duties such as court filings, compilation of evidence notebooks,
and coordination with other law offices, law enforcement agencies, and
the media.
1993-1994: Law Office of David P. Beeson--Unpaid
internship leading to part-time contract paralegal work involving personal
injury and family law issues. Performed case research, filing of
motions and pleadings, deposition summarization, process service and client
billing in addition to general office support.
1993: California State University San Marcos--Laboratory
assistant for the chemistry and biology departments. Performed equipment
installation and maintenance including the setup and operation of an on-site
machine shop; also solicited bids for and ordered supplies and provided
tutoring for students.
1992: Radio Shack--Provided customer service and
maintained store inventory, sales, and banking records. Assisted
customers with troubleshooting problems. Responsible for training and supervision
of up to six employees in absence of store manager; de facto store manager
for six-week period (August-October 1992) after termination of store manager.
1991: San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station--Temporary
work as radioactive materials handler for Bartlett Nuclear, Inc., a contract
health physics and radioactive disposal company, during a refueling outage.
Responsible for locating, assessing, and eliminating radioactive contamination
within the protected area of the plant. Background check and security
clearance required for position.
IV. PROFESSIONAL INTERNSHIPS/VOLUNTEER WORK
1998-Present: Steward, National Treasury Employees Union Chapter 212--
Employee representative in large government office; activities include grievance filing/processing,
employee relations, recruitment, counseling, and the drafting of a union/management partnership
agreement. Extensive training in the Federal Labor Relations Authority, interest-based negotiations,
and the mechanics of the labor organization. Also editor of chapter newsletter.
1994: Public Defender’s Office, County of San Diego--Assisted
trial attorneys during arraignment and restitution hearings; interviewed
clients in courtroom holding tanks and at the county jail; performed file
maintenance on office PC’s
1993: San Diego Bar Association Volunteer Lawyer Program--Volunteer
work the association’s Domestic Violence Restraining Order clinic.
Interviewed clients; processed court forms and referred clients to judge
or clerk as necessary
1991: San Diego Supercomputer Center--As a science
writing intern, contributed to articles for the journal Supercomputing
Review and authored a popularly-directed text on X-ray crystallography.
