If there's one thing I get truly fired up about, it's the universe around us. For me, the stars represent the future and hope; a sure sign that Someone cares about humanity and has a plan--after all, why show us the universe if we aren't going to go there! Astronomy and space exploration are really the same thing; in that light, humanity has been exploring space since the first clear night after the campfire went out! Here are some links (and, in the future, observing notes of mine!) which I hope will help you appreciate the stars and the universe as much as I do:
Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy is specifically designed to correct common astronomy mistakes made in the media. This site incorporates Bite-Size Astronomy of the Week, a neat little site which gives you tidbits about what's up in everyday language. Very good for beginners!
Clementine Project and Lunar Prospector -- Come learn about America's return to the Moon! Details about these two recent lunar missions (Lunar Prospector is shown at right), including the discovery of water ice on the Moon, can be found at these sites.
The Astronomical League -- Worldwide association of local astronomy clubs. Contact them to find out about a club near you, or join the League as a Member At Large and participate in many simple, yet enjoyable observing projects!
Because the Earth has two hemispheres, a Northern hemisphere and a Southern hemisphere, Tim Maynard of Invercargill, New Zealand brings us Fox T. Mulder's Astronomy, a page chock full of information for astronomers everywhere!
The logo above is for the Virtual Space Museum, created by Alexander Chernov of the Computing Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It's a really neat site, with VRML-enhanced models of equipment used by the Soviet/Russian space program past and present! Also includes info on the aborted Soviet manned lunar mission (lander pictured at left). Also includes lots of links to other sites related to Russia's space program. For more information on the Soviet lunar program, see also Karl Dodenhoff's excellent site. Includes reference materials never before seen outside the former USSR! NASA Human Spaceflight -- Learn all about the joint US/Russian/European/Japanese space station here! Includes a virtual model of the station which you can explore from the comfort of your own terminal. Also includes the latest on upcoming Space Shuttle missions, planned Mars missions, and the joint Shuttle/Mir program. Very informative and well laid-out. NOTE: In order to enjoy the virtual models at both the Virtual Space Museum and the NASA Human Spaceflight sites, you will need CosmoPlayer 2.0. Why not download it now? It's FREE! AstroNet -- Operated by the University of Arizona chapter of Students for the Exploration and Development of Space (SEDS), this site contains a lot of astronomy freeware/shareware to get you started. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory -- JPL is the focal point of most of the U.S. unmanned space exploration effort. Learn about current and new missions (including the Cassini mission to Saturn, left) at this site. Mars Home Page -- Complete results from Mars Pathfinder; current data from Mars Global Surveyor (including the definitive word on the "face on Mars") and info on upcoming Mars missions. Nozomi/Planet B -- Japan's first interplanetary probe (right). Learn about it at this site (in English)! These links will be updated frequently to reflect updates to the various missions described herein. NEW!!!My observing notes are now online for comment/confirmation. Feel free to contact me!
