This crossover, ladies and gentlemen, is probably going to rate with some of the most insane writing ever created. Most of the people who would be reading this probably have a good idea of what Ranma 1/2 is - for those that don't, information regarding it may be found at any one of these websites. Harder to find is information on Sam and Max, seeing as many of the publications it's been adapted to haven't done more than a brief overview. You can look this page if you have Shockwave installed, or you can look at some of the comics drawn for Lucasarts' merchandise magazine, The Adventurer, or just go here for all the info you couldn't possibly want to know about.
As for how the universe is set up, we're going primarily with Ranma characters in a Sam and Max setting, just because there's not enough regulars to go around in Sam and Max for them to transplant into the Ranmaverse, whereas we can put the extra Ranma characters in as random and insane villainous persons. Of course, to truly get the feel of Sam and Max, their style of dialogue and outward reactions will be used in replacement of Ranma's and Ryoga's normally used interaction. Don't worry, underlying traits and tendencies will still be kept, such as Ranma slipping in an unsensitive remark about Akane just for the gleefully unnecessary violence that ensues as a result.
And, for purposes of random obscure references, inside jokes and the like, there will be a few characters thrown into previously used characters that have drawn some attention besides our two intrepid freelance police, and you may need to look up the info pages above to recognize these. But, overall, it shouldn't be too much of a struggle to figure out the mayhem. Okay, perhaps it will, but you shouldn't be trying in the first place. Just sit back and enjoy. Oh, and laugh until your head explodes and leaves chunky brain goo all around the chair. I like that.
