"The Raven" is a suspense poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, one of North American’s greatest literary figures in the 19th century. This poem talks about a man whose girlfriend "Lenore" died, he feels so sad and missed her very much. On a dark dreary December night, a strange thing happened. He is reading the book to forget his dead girlfriend. After a while, he feels so tired, then he has a nap. Suddenly, he hears the tapping at his chamber door, but when the man opens the door, he does not see anything except a whispered word "Lenore" coming from the darkness. Later on, he hears someone tapping at his door again. This time, he opens the door, he sees a raven enter and begin to sit regally on top of statue. The man feels strange, so he came up and asks the raven for the name. However, the raven only says "Nevermore", the man is confused but is not scared now. He asks the raven to leave, but the strange thing is the raven didn’t move and stays on the statue forever, and never leaves.

In the poem, the poet used a lot of poetic devices t express his feeling, such as assonance, alliteration, repetition, and rhyme. The poet used assonance, as in, " For the race and radiant maiden, whom the angels name Lenore." We can see it repeat vowel sound of "a". He also used a lot of alliteration. For example, "Doubting dreaming dreams no mortal level, dared t dream before " and "In the stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore." The repetition of the poem is funny, because it ends with the word "more" at every stanza. This poem also used rhyme. For example, rhyme scheme for the first stanza is "dreary, weary, lore, tapping, door, door, more." It males it easy to read and remember. These devices represent the uniqueness of the poem. The mood of this poem is mysterious, melancholy, sadness, suspense, and scary. For example, "Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak. And each separate dying ember wrought its Ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow vainly I had sought to borrow." The setting of the poem is in the author’s room because it mentions in the story with "rapping at my chamber door." In the room there is "purple curtain", "above my chamber," there is a bust of Pallas. Also it said "Once upon a midnight dreary", make the poem more suspense. Finally, the poem also used the metaphor. For example "but with mien of lord or lady.

I like this poem, because it's a suspense poem. I like to read the suspense poem of book, because I like the strange feeling. Also I think it's a remarkable type of writing, and an unusual phenomenon the poet used in this poem. The words and the way they sound are serious and peculiar, and they sound like different emotions, and every stanzas had rhyme scheme in it to make us easy to remember. The subject I like in the poem is it show the man missed his girlfriend very much, and what the Raven really represents. Also, the poem's mysteriousness was it's a dark and cold December night, and the poet used Raven to make the whole poem look-see in more strange. This poem also can make me think a lot and had different kinds of feeling in it, and the way the poet used literary elements in the poem. I really want to know about the raven, also the poet wants to know what is the Raven's name, and what the raven really represents. I think the Raven is the poet's girlfriend, hid girlfriend misses him too. So she turned into a raven and sits regally on top of a statue forever and never leaves, because she wants to always be in his side, but I don't know if it's true or not.
