DIRECTIONS

ENTRANCES

There are four Museum entrances: up the steps on Central Park West and 79th Street; below the steps on Central Park West and 79th Street; from the subway stop (B or C) at 81st Street; and on 77th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue.

TRANSPORTATION

By Subway: Take the B (weekdays only) or C to 81st Street. Visitors can enter directly into the lower level of the Museum from the south end of the subway station. Two blocks west of the Museum, the 1 and 9 trains stop at Broadway and West 79th Street.

By Bus: The M79 bus travels east/west on W. 79th Street across Central Park, with a stop next to the Museum on W. 81st Street. Other buses also stop at or near the Museum, including the M7, M10, M11, M86 and M104 buses.

ACCESSIBILITY

All public areas in the Museum are accessible to wheelchairs; all video displays are captioned for the hearing impaired.

CHECKROOM

Coats, umbrellas, and bags may be checked for a nominal fee. The checkroom is located in the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda, directly inside the main entrance of the Museum at Central Park West at 79th Street.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Except where noted, photography for personal use is allowed with hand-held cameras and with available light or electronic flash attachments. Tripods and lights may not be used. Reproduction or sale of photographs is not allowed without Museum permission.

INSIDER'S HOUR TOUR

The Museum is proud to offer a tour built around the amazing stories and hidden facts behind our world-famous dioramas and exhibits. You can join this "insider's look" at one of the world's great natural history museums. Call 212-496-3410 for tour times and dates. Tours depart from the entrance to African Mammals, located on the Museum's second floor, immediately outside the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda. No advance reservation is required and the Insider's Hour tour is free with Museum admission.

 

HIGHLIGHTS TOURS

Daily, 10:15 and 11:15 a.m., 12:15, 1:15, 2:15, and 3:15 p.m.
Volunteer tour guides give a general overview of the Museum's highlights, including at least five Halls. Tours last just over an hour. Tours begin on the second floor between the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda and the Hall of African Mammals unless otherwise specified.

SPOTLIGHT TOURS

Get an in-depth look at one of the Museum's major theme areas, from dinosaurs to sharks. A limited number of tours are available in French, Spanish and Sign Language. Call 212-769-5200 for rates and reservations. Tours begin on the second floor between the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Hall and the Hall of African Mammals unless otherwise specified. You must come to the Museum to find out what spotlight tours are available that day.
FOSSIL EXPLAINER SCHEDULE

Fossil Explainers are on duty in the 4th floor Halls to answer questions from Museum visitors on the following schedule:

ADVANCE TICKETING

You can order tickets in advance for American Museum of Natural History admission, a specific IMAX film, a special exhibition, and lectures and special events. Call 212-769-5200 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and 10:00 a.m. - 6 :00 p.m. on Saturday to reserve your tickets. American Express, MasterCard, or Visa accepted. There is a $1.00 service charge per order.

If you order more than two weeks in advance you will receive your tickets by mail. Otherwise, pick up your reserved tickets at the Advance Ticket Sales & Pick-up desk inside the main Museum entrance at Central Park West and 79th Street.

CityPass

You can purchase a CityPass ticket book at the Museum, which will allow you to attend six attractions - the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, the Empire State Building Observatory, and the Top of the World Trade Center - for one discounted price.

Prices for the CityPass are $28.00 for adults, $18.75 for seniors over sixty-five, and $21.00 for youths 13-18. There is no CityPass designed for children under thirteen; children's tickets should be purchased at each attraction. The CityPass is good for nine days from the date purchased.

You may purchase the CityPass at the Advance Ticket Sales Desk at the Museum, which is located inside the main Museum entrance at Central Park West at 79th Street. You may also purchase a CityPass by mail by calling (212)-769-5200.

 

GROUP VISITS

The American Museum of Natural History offers a available for groups of 10 or more, and many.  To make a reservation, call 212-769-5200, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Reservations must be made at least four weeks in advance.

Located on the Lower Lever, the Diner Saurus serves a fast lunch: sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, and snacks. Perfect for kids!

THE WHALE'S LAIR
