Fundamentalist and Evangelical Christians are fond of showing Bible verses that reflect the goodness and mercy of Biblegod. When they "share the Good News of Jesus" they love to show us such verses as these (all verses from KJV):
Psalms 86:5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
Psalms 86:15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
Daniel 9:9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
Micah 7:18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by t like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
2 Corinthians 1:3 ¶ Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort.
Sounds nice, doesn't it? But is this all there is to it? Christians, who claim the Bible holds "the high moral ground," very often don't tell us about the other side of the Bible's tribal deity. They often forget to "share" with us the atrocities committed in the name of biblegod. I'd like to rectify this slight oversight and give you another look at the "mercy" and "goodness" of biblegod. Here now are just a few samples of Biblegod's lovingkindness.
Deuteronomy 32:23 I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them. 24 They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. 25 The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the your within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs.
1 Samuel 15:2 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt. 3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.
2 Kings 8:12 And Hazael said, Why weepeth my lord? And he answered, Because I know the evil that thou wilt do unto the children of Israel: their strong holds wilt thou set on fire, and their young men wilt thou slay with the sword, and wilt dash their children, and rip up their women with child.
Psalm 137:8 O daughter of Babylon, who art to be destroyed; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. 9 Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.
Isaiah 13:16 Their children also shall be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.
Lamentations 5:11 They ravished the women in Zion, and the maids in the cities of Judah.
Hosea 10:14 Therefore shall a tumult arise among thy people, and all thy fortressy people, and all thy fortresses shall be spoiled, as Shalman spoiled Betharbel in the day of battle: the mother was dashed in pieces upon her children.
Hosea 13:16 Samaria shall become desolate; for she hath rebelled against her God: they shall fall by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces, and their women with child shall be ripped up.
Nahum 3:10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the top of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honourable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.
Zechariah 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Have you noticed how many times pregnant women's bellies were ripped open? How many times women were ravished? How many times children were dashed against the rocks? All of the above verses, and there are many many more just like these in the Bible, show the contempt that the Bible's deity had for human life, especially women and children's lives. In reality it shows the utter contemp for human life the Hebrews had. They are, after all, the creators of YHWH, who was made in their express image.
But those things were done by men, you say? Yes, but the Bible states they were commanded by biblegod. Read the contexts of these verses and see where the ancient Hebrews believed they were commanded by biblegod to do those things, or see how the Babylonians, or the Assyrians, were said to have been manipulated by biblegod to do those things in order to punish "unfaithful" Israel.
The point is this: How can Christians claim that their god is merciful and good when such atrocities are committed against the defenseless and the weak in the very name of the deity who they claim is merciful? Saying that biblegod sent his only begotten son to die for us won't cut it. This was a human sacrifice for the "sins" of others. In short: an innocent man was killed for the wrongdoings of another. This is justice?!
Christians are the first to scream bloody murder when society wrongfully accuses and condemns an innocent man, but their god can do it to tens of thousands and even his own son and he's perfectly justified? What kind of convoluted logic is this? Moreoever, Christians are forever telling us that abortion is murder. Why don't they condemn the Bible's deity for ordering the deaths of tens of thousands of the unborn? And why not condemn that deity for ordering the deaths of thousands of pregnant women, having their bellies ripped open, thus killing them and their fetus in one fell swoop? Where is the consistency? Where is the honesty??? Nowhere to be found in the churches of Christendom!
If Christians were honest with the biblical data, they'd have to admit that biblegod was nothing more than a tribal deity, created in the image of the ancient Hebrew people and no better than the other tribal deities created by the Babylonians, the Assyrians or the Cannaanites. But this would mean that they'd have to admit that the Bible is nothing more than the mythology of the ancient Hebrews and we can't have that, now can we? Imagine the horror of living life as a "Godless Atheist." Heaven forbid!
The next time a Christian comes to your door with his song and dance about the "mercy" and "goodness" of his god, demand that he explain why biblegod didn't have any more respect for his creation, especially for women, children and the unborn. Demand an honest answer, but don't expect one, because you'll be sorely disappointed.
