Bookreport – The Color Purple
Activity #3 Your Reaction
From Walker’s The Color Purple, I see that during the old century, women’s reputations were so low and worthless for any men and even in the society. They don’t get any right to do anything. Not just for women, even for the little young girls. Just like the main character Celie in this novel. When she was about 14, she got raped by her father. Also, I see that how brutal her father was. The author wrote how her father treated little Celie that also tell the readers what kind of society was during that time. Otherwise, he might be arrested already if he did that to his daughter. That was illegal. Celie didn’t have any reaction after his father did such things for her. I know she was so miserable, but no one will care about it, and she was so timid. She is only a little young girl. After I finish reading this book, I feel that Celie was so pitiful, she couldn’t get any help from outside, just let her father did whatever he wanted. When she was not mature enough, once she got 2 babies from her father, but these two unborn babies were killed by her father too. I think her father was really hatred. He didn’t have any conscience to think about all he did for his daughter. I feel so sympathize for Celie.
For me, I think Walker wrote this book for everyone, the author just wanted to show to everyone that what kind background of that generation by telling us the story about Celie. And let us understand that in this world, there still have some people who can do such ridiculous things. Celie had such bad experience, that made her has struggled for many years. I can believe that many people won’t have courage to live if they met the same case as Celie. It is Celie’s courageous spirit that we admire her fierce, unflagging love for her little sister. In addition, she was not only just raped by her father, in her marriage, she got cursed by her husband. However, Celie’s love for everyone that finally allows her to forgive her husband, for all of his intentional cruelty. Love heals heartaches, and love leads Celie to forgiveness and reconciliation. I think the author was successful in getting the message across, although it is not an easy book to read because it is not written in the style of most novels. And the author doesn’t tell us everything about the characters and the setting and why the characters behave as they do. However, I think that is also a good way to say a story, by writing all letters in that novel. Be more special. I said the author was successful because I got a very clear point about this novel, I know why Celie didn’t do anything for all of her bad experiences which were given by her father and her husband. The reason is Celie is so kind, just like I mentioned before, her love made her forgive everyone, but the author never told us why. Therefore, I said Walker was successful.
The two good points about this novel is that first, the story it talked about attracted me a lot, I would like to keep reading it when I just read at the beginning of it. It won’t let me feel bored. Second, its main point is so clear, and really reflect there are many people who can do anything so cruelly. Also, that point is not only for that century, for now, I still believe there still has someone who will do the same thing as Celie’s father and her husband did to her. The two bad points are this book is too difficult to read, sometimes it will mess me up. And the things it talked about were not so proper for children to read, they will feel so weird because they won’t understand so easily about the main point. However, I think I will like to recommend this book to my friend to read because it is really good, and you will feel totally different with the format and the way of telling the story in that book. Also, you will see so many things that you might not see before, just like how was Celie treated by her husband and father.
This novel mentioned a lot about virtual slave, the victim of men, of traditional sexual roles, of racism, and of innumerable social injustices. When the novel is finished, we will have seen Celie grow into a whole human being-as well as into a mature, twentieth-century woman. I think I will read more about this author, because this author’s books talk about many things. And let me just getting more and more interested on reading them. From this novel, I think that I could learn something from Celie, she always gave love for everyone. And the encourage she had, although she met such bad treatments, she could still cherish her own life and also she didn’t want to leave her only sister. So, I like this book, and I also admire Celie a lot.
