About "The Raven"

Edgar Allan Poe was a great writer in the U.S. He wrote many short stories and poem during his lifetime. This week, I read about one of his poems, which was named " The Raven". This poem talked about at one dark December night, man felt so tried and sad because his girlfriend was dead, she wouldn’t come back again. And he was in his room and reading his book, but he heard a rapping on his door. He wanted to know who visited him so late, but when he opened the door, he saw nothing was there. And the only thing he heard was " Lenore". He thought that was his girlfriend. When he heard the rapping again, he saw a raven sat on the head of a statue over the door. When he asked the raven’s name, its answer was "nevermore." And that bird didn’t want to leave his room.

This poem expressed a mood which was melancholy. Like "Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow; and the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain. " Also, it was suspenseful, for example, " Thrilled me – fill me fantastic terrors never felt before." In this poem, the author used many different kind of poetic devices, such as assonance. "Eagerly I wished the morrow;-vainly I had sought to borrow". " Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary," this was the first sentence of this poem, and the author used rhyme in it. Also, he used the repetition for the poem, from first stanza through the last stanza, we could see that at the end of the stanza, there were the word like " more, evermore, more, more, more, more, more, nevermore". He used many times for "more". That was called " repetition".

After I read this poem, I admired the author so much. The way he wrote, thought, are so terrific. And also, we can feel that kind of feeling he got when we were reading it. The rhyme scheme fits the mood of the poem very well. For example, on first stanza, it said like " Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore", we can find out some words like "dreary, weary", these two words tell us that it is a suspenseful story. That is how the rhyme scheme fits the mood of the poem.
