The cat is one of the trademarks of Kuching, a
small city in Malaysia on the Island of Borneo. A bunch of
SASers and I got off the ship and directly on a plane to
Borneo.

The drive from Kuching to the inner part of
Sarawak took several hours, and we stopped often. This was
taken at a pepper and cocoa farm. I think it is a cocoa bean
of some sort.
|
We finally arrived at an area near a river. We
got onto long and narrow boats for an awesome ride through
the lush forest.

Another picture of me with a life-preserver,
although this one isn't quite as humiliating.

We arrived at our destination - a longhouse
village in the midst of a level-2 rainforest.
|
Longhouses are a type of communal living. They
have extremely long hallways with rooms to one side and a
long patio on the other.
|
|
|
|
Many of the residents of the longhouse village
are wonderfully artistic in many ways. This man was
sculpting something out of wood.

That night we were treated with a festive tribal
occasion. We met the chief and donated a gift for the
children. Then some men and women played music and danced
for us. Their music was simple, yet inviting, and we soon
joined in.
|
|
Their movements were amazing as was their dress.
|
|
That night we slept in a guesthouse, and I must
admit I was a bit freaked out by all the new noises,
animals, and odd-looking bugs. I could only think about all
the TV shows I watched about the venemous snakes and spiders
of the region. Nevertheless, I woke up alive - and I'm not
really afraid of bugs anymore.
|
|
The next morning Keri and I went hiking around
the longhouse area, and although it was short, it was one of
my favorite hikes.
