    What is Depression (and what is it not)?
    "People who don't know, who say it's self-indulgence, sound callous, but it's not callousness born of indifference; I think it's callousness born of ignorance. That kind of ignorance we've got to get rid of, and little by little I suppose, we will. You say to them, 'It's a pity you don't know. I'm sure that if you knew, I'm sure that if you knew, not only wouldn't you say that, you'd try to help in one way or another.'" - Mike Wallace, On the Edge of Darkness

    Snippets of Lyrics and Poems...

    All you touch and all you see,
    Is all your life will ever be.
    - - - Pink Floyd, "Breathe"

    And the seasons, they go round and round,
    And the painted ponies go up and down.
    We're captive on the carousel of time.
    We can't return, we can only look
    Behind from where we came,
    And go round and round and round in the circle game.
    - - - Joni Mitchell, "The Circle Game"

    He goes along just as a water lily
    Gentle on the surface of his thoughts his body floats
    Unweighed down by passion or intensity
    Yet unaware of the depth upon which he coasts
    And he finds a home in me
    For what misfortune sows, he knows my touch will reap
    - - -Fiona Apple, "Pale September"

    He not busy being born is busy dying.
    - - - Bob Dylan, "It's Alright, Ma"

    I'm just a soul whose intentions are good,
    Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood.
    - - - Joe Cocker, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood"

    It's the heart afraid of dying, that never learns to dance;
    It's the dream afraid of waking, that never takes the chance;
    It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give;
    And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live.
    - - - Bette Midler, "The Rose"

    I've looked at life from both sides now
    From up and down, and still somehow
    It's life's illusions I recall
    I really don't know life at all.
    - - - Joni Mitchell "Both Sides Now"

    All that is gold does not glitter,
    Not all those who wander are lost
    The old that is strong does not wither,
    Deep roots are not reached by frost.
    - - - -J. R. R. Tolkien "Lord of the Rings"

    Beauty never slumbers;
    All is in her name;
    But the rose remembers
    The dust from which it came.
    - - - -Edna St. Vincent Millay

    Before the beginning of years
    There came to the making of man
    Time, with a gift of tears;
    Grief, with a glass that ran;
    Pleasure, with pain for leaven;
    Summer, with flowers that fell;
    Remembrance, fallen from heaven,
    And madness risen from hell;
    Strength without hands to smite;
    Love that endures for a breath;
    Night, the shadow of light,
    And Life, the shadow of death.
    - - - -Algernon Charles Swinburne "Atalanta in Calydon" (1865)

    It's easy, perhaps to die for a dream
    With banners unfurled - and be forgiving!
    It's the hardest part to follow the gleam
    When scorned by the world - and go on living!
    - - - -Myra Brooks Welch

    Descriptions of conditions like schizophrenia started to appear in Europe around 1850 and Kraepelin in 1878 followed by Beuler in 1908 described it quite well. Beuler coined the term "the schizophrenias", meaning literally "split mind", - not to be confused with split personality, which is entirely different. It has probably been around for a much longer time though, because it has a fairly even distribution around the world. Rich and poor, male and female, about one per cent of any population develops schizophrenia

    Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders

    Because addiction has so many dimensions and disrupts so many aspects of an individual's life, treatment for this illness is never simple. Drug treatment must help the indi-vidual stop using drugs and maintain a drug-free lifestyle, while achieving productive functioning in the family, at work, and in society. Effective drug abuse and addiction treatment programs typically incorporate many compo-nents, each directed to a particular aspect of the illness and its consequences.
